On January 25, 2011, twenty community development practitioners and funders came together to participate in an interactive strategic planning session for the Alliance (Advancing Community Development by Confronting Racism). Last year, the Alliance invested in a program evaluation; with this evaluation report in hand, they convened a diverse group of community development practitioners and local funders to set forth the next steps for upcoming years.

The Alliance was created when changing demographics of communities throughout the state led the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporation (MACDC), Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and, Boston-area Community Development Corporations (CDCs) to begin working together to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of CDC staff, particularly at the mid- and senior levels. It became apparent that neighborhoods in which CDCs work were increasingly of color, yet the leadership of CDCs remained overwhelmingly white. The Alliance continues to challenge CDCs to recruit, develop and retain current minority staff members to climb to senior level positions.

Pam Jones, Director of Policy and Planning with the Boston Public Health Commission, serves on the Alliance Steering committee and commented on the strategic planning session that took place. “There was a lot of energy and thoughtful discussions that took place in the Alliance Strategy Meeting. I’m excited that so many people care about the impact of racism on the community development field and want to do something about it.”

Specifically, the group that participated brainstormed strategies to help the Alliance move forward with the following programs including, the Mentoring Program, the Recruiting and Retaining of People of Color and the Quarterly Dialogues, and identifying new people for the Steering Committee, Advisory Committee and sub-groups.
