 April 29, 2011

Alongside other organizations across the United States, The Alliance hosted its own “Stand Against Racism” event. The Alliance, a coalition of community development organizations and practitioners dedicated to increasing racial and ethnic diversity and addressing racism in the community development sector, coordinated its own day of action to raise awareness that racism still exists in our communities.
The event was held at the Boston Private Bank and Trust on April 29, 2011and included a showing of “Race the Power of an Illusion, The House We Live In”, followed by a lively discussion. All participants were delighted that the event gave them the opportunity to speak freely on their own personal views. Janet Grogan, who attended the event, said, “Thank you to the Alliance for having the event. The discussion that took place after the viewing was one of the most richest and honest conversations that I have been a part of.”

The Stand Against Racism is a movement of the YWCA with the goal of bringing people together from all walks of life and from across the country to raise awareness that racism still exists. The methodology of Stand Against Racism is to bring together like-minded organizations that share in the YWCA’s vision of eliminating racism and celebrating the richness of diversity. By inviting community organizations to partner with them, and maximizing the outreach of their mission, they attract hundreds of thousands of participants.

That same week, Boston LISC Staff member and Alliance Committee member Marilyn Sanchez joined MACDC staff at “Race: Are We So Different?”, an Exhibit at Boston’s Museum of Science. The interactive show presents a historical and scientific look at the concept of race, exposing both its wide ranging effects on society and its limits as a purely cultural construct. Marilyn commented: “It’s amazing what people will do to justify their racist acts”. After viewing the exhibit the group discussed how race has continued to affect our lives today.
