Job Description: Accelerate Boston Manager
Accelerate Boston is a microenterprise startup technical assistance program managed by Nuestra Comunidad Development Corporation, a community development corporation based in the Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan neighborhoods of Boston, in partnership with the Future Boston Alliance, a nonprofit also based in Roxbury, and Boston LISC (Local Initiative Support Corporation). The overall goal of the program is to continue to support a growing small business and entrepreneurship eco-system in Boston and increase the number of small businesses of color within Boston. This program will contribute to the economic self-sufficiency of clients and their families by assisting eligible clients to start small businesses. The Accelerate Boston Manager will deliver hands-on technical assistance to recent graduates/alumni of the Accelerate Boston startup training program, a six-month class for new or aspiring startup entrepreneurs drawn from Nuestra’s target communities as well as graduates from Boston LISC’s entrepreneurship program. The Accelerate Boston Manager will work closely with the program’s training provider, Future Boston Alliance.
 
The Accelerate Boston Manager is primarily responsible for assisting small business startup clients with their business plans; helping to develop client financial documents and forecasts by providing technical assistance and analysis on an individual basis; assisting clients in preparing and submitting microloan applications and funding proposals; and providing targeted mentoring, networking and professional development referrals.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES generally include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Assess participant’s readiness to proceed with startup and financing and assigns each participant to the appropriate tier of technical assistance needs. Services will be targeted for strong candidates to assist in next step in business development needs including: completing/updating business plans, preparing loan applications, troubleshooting and navigating through various growth barriers, and referrals to other small business TA providers if needed.
  • Assist in identifying and strengthening areas of growth for program alumni. Potential areas may include: marketing or website development, connecting to resources including the City of Boston for support around licensing and permits, identifying potential space, strengthening understanding of business financials.
  • Coordinates and delivers training seminars, educational programs, networking and/or lecture series events for small business clients based on training needs from interaction with program alumni.
  • Prepares initial evaluations of alumni financial background, credit history and business experience for the purpose of accessing business viability and loan repayment capability.
  • For top tier clients, delivers and implements a 90 day financial action plan using a case management approach and encompassing the following individual technical services:
    • Reviews business plan and financial statements and makes necessary corrections and recommendations to strengthen them. Analyzes clients' marketing plans and looks for areas of improvement.
    • Prepares initial evaluations on client financial background, credit history and business experience for the purpose of accessing business viability and loan repayment capability.
    • Refer clients to relevant mentoring, networking and training opportunities.
    • Manages loan application, helps clients gather closing documents and prepare and submit packages.
  • Following the 90 day financial action plan, provide the following services:
    • For clients receiving loans or other financing, checks in with client to see that loan payments are made in a timely fashion and that client's business is progressing according to plan.
    • For clients beginning to do business, assists with and follows up with clients on fulfilling business legal requirements; licenses, permits, and insurance.
  • Assists with marketing and outreach strategy for new round of program participants. Attends regular small business events and presents informational and promotional collateral at community events.
  • Helps prepare client documents and statistics as needed and mid-year and final reports on funding activity.
  • Follows prescribed safety procedures. Acts to ensure safety for self, co-workers and consumers.
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with professional standards. Works cooperatively with co-workers and maintains congenial relationships with Agency employees, clients/consumers, and outside representatives. Where appropriate, demonstrates empathy and concern in client/consumer interaction. Complies with all appropriate Agency policies and procedures.
 
DESIRED CAPACITIES
B.A. or B.S. Degree in Business Management, Finance, Accounting or Operations Management preferred. Ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the small business/entrepreneurship community in Boston and/or experience with start-up businesses. Experience working with potential investors or experience with various investment networks is strongly preferred. Extensive college coursework and completion of two or more accounting courses required. Prefer minimum of three-years of experience in any business financial area, specifically small business lending and loan management environment and/or background in microenterprise and or entrepreneurship. Previous business consulting experience and experience working with low-income communities preferred. Loan packaging experience is preferred.
Bilingual in English and any other foreign language, such as: Spanish, Haitian creole or Cape Verdean creole highly preferred. Highly effective interpersonal skills and team player skills are a must. Cultural competence desired, including the ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals with widely diverse educational backgrounds. Local travel is mandatory. Valid driver's license. Requires solid knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
 
SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a full-time position. Competitive salary based on experience. Open to alternative proposals for employment or consulting.
